1. Personalize Your Message

Personalized messages and letters create a stronger bond and deliver a better response. Make your recipients feel special, as though you’re giving your time to just them. The more personal you can make your letter, the better your ROI will be.

2. Make It Easy to Read

When people pick up a sales piece, they’ll start by quickly glancing through it. Organize your direct mail design so that people get your message quickly and don’t abandon reading before they understand your offer. Keep the fonts clean and legible.

3. Use Images with Feelings

Use pictures that induce feelings—of how the recipient will feel with that beautiful new car or how relaxed they will be on their luxury vacation. Offer images that allow the recipients to build upon and tailor to their own fantasies.

4. Have an Angle

Answer the question, “What is it about this product that makes it a special interest of value to me?” Once you have this question answered, you have the angle of your campaign. With this, everything else will fall in place.

5. NO SHOUTING

No one likes getting shouted at, and using all caps has this effect. While you want to get your message across, it is better to use more lowercase letters, smaller fonts and lettering. Designing a stand out direct mail piece does not mean you have to shock the reader.

6. Human Touch

You definitely want your campaign and direct mail piece to be attractive and to draw attention, but you also want to give it as much of a human touch as possible. Show your company’s personality. Don’t be afraid to be creative.
